The Beginning of Placid Bay Estates
Prehistory
Before the 1960s, the land now occupied by Placid Bay Estates contained the long-standing "Wirt's Mill" and a popular fishing lake. The Southern half was farmland growing wheat. The Northern half was heavily wooded.
Land Purchase
On October 22, 1959, Camar Corporation purchased the land, from J. W. and Effie D. Dickerson. They spent the following years creating dozens of roads and subdividing lots. They built five dams, making a total of 4 lakes: Placid Lake, Lake Chrystal, Lake Diableux, and Lake Petite. In addition to the docs and amenities on the lakes, they built a swimming pool. They moved three historic millstones to "Mill Stone Circle" and installed the 35-foot flag pole still flying Old Glory.
Subdivision Creation
On December 22, 1966, Camar Corporation officially created the subdivision "Placid Bay Estates" while dedicating the ownership of the streets and lakes to the lot owners.
Lot Sales
The lots, costing about $800, were advertised as opportunities to build homes in a resort community.
